I was at a small 16 people NL tourney last night. I 2nd in chips mid way through the game.. The chip leader had just rivered and knocked out the last 3 guys. He was short stacked just before and just wanted to end his own misery.

Mid tourney. I'm Big Blind - Q9o

Chip leader is in 4 position. 3rd position calls, 4th calls. Everyone else folds. I get in for free.

Flop - Qc 9h 3c (woo hoo)
>3rd -checks
>chip leader (after just knocking out a guy the previoius hand playing 26s and beat bullets by pulling off the flush) bets 7x BB

I peg him going for another flush. I go all.

3rd pos fold.

He has QKo

Turn 6x

River Kx

I'm done..

Any critiques?? Was I too aggressive? Or just call it bad luck?

You should've just called instead of trying to go over the top. Unless you had the nuts after the flop, there is no reason to go all-in.

I'd have called his bet on the flop....If he checked to me on theturn when no scare cards fell (e.g., any cards less than the 9), I'd have made a large bet. If he comes out slinging chips on the turn, then I'd have set him in (assuming no scare cards fell). You put him on a hand, and were wrong...but you still had him just about dead to rights. The river just fucked you there...keep in mind, he only had three outs to beat you at that point. Tough break.

All skill-play and know-hows aside... sometimes we all drown at the river!

All the skill in the work cannot account for the random element of the game. We can play with the worst hand and still make a monster, yet when we play the AA hand, we still get beat down!

It's poker...

I think you played it right, I think I would have done the same thing. You got outdrawn by an inferior player, I say that because he bet 7x the bb with only top pair and k kicker and then he called an all in with top pair when it surely wasn't good. There was also a club draw out there and he could have bet on a j 10 str8 draw, so I think you played it perfectly especially since it looks like he might have been on tilt.

I would say that the fault with your play was using all in against a wreckless player. Throwing all in is something you can do only if you know you have a definite winner or against someone who typically plays conservatively. Your opponent clearly was a wreckless player who was willing to toss chips around on nothing and come up with some lucky draws. He did it the hand before and he followed that up by doing it to you. In your position, I would have put him on top pair with a kicker. Putting someone on a flush draw with a raise that size seems like a mistake to me, but you know your opponent. A raise that size is usually to push a flush draw out, not representative of one. My play would have been to call his raise, watch his play on fourth street, calling there, then been scared on fifth. All in is a play I would shy away from with a guy who tosses chips for kicks. It was a tough beat, but one that happens.

All-in can be a real equaliser. Unless you've got something big on the flop, there is seldom reason to go in. If you've got a high chance of hitting, sure, but I would have waited till the turn to be a little more sure of my position.

From his last play though, it was reasonable to assume he may well match you all-in with very little in hand. He got a little lucky. You could have played more conservatively perhaps, but on another day he would have had nothing on the turn or the river and you would have taken the pot. Simple as.
