No-limit tournament style with about 6 players left. I'm on the button, one player has limped in, all others have folded. I have A J suited(diamonds) and bet 4 times the big blind(I have about $20 the players on the blinds are both under $10,the limper has $28 and the big blind is $1). The blinds fold and the limper smooth calls me. Flop comes A 3 6, two of them diamonds. The limper goes all in. I made him for A 3 suited so I figured I had 15 outs and called(kowing his play, I figured he would have raised with 6's, thrown 3's away and called A 3 hoping for a flush or a straight). He had pocket 3's. Who throws it away after the flop? In retrospect, I think I should have folded; he could have been slow playing AK or AQ and me going all-in when I think at best I have 50% shot to win wasn't a smart play.

If you put him on A 3 after he pushed all-in calling would have been the correct play. You would have been a favorite in the hand by 6.87%. Even though your opponent has a made hand already. But once you factor in the pot odds (in this case are not in your favor) the correct play would have been to fold. This is a situation where a lot of players get in trouble. Not because the quality of their cards or if they misread a person. But because they do not factor all the different type of odds to see if they are actually favored to call. Mathematically cards wise you made the correct call. Mathematically poker wise you should have folded.
