In no limit i see most top players make pot sized bets... is there ever a time to make a 1/2 pot sized bet, or the minimum? is there ever a time to raise the minimum?

i understand it makes no sense to go all-in on a very small pot... but does it ever make sense to bet small into a large pot?

you make a minimum size bet when you want to trap someone... it invites them to come over the top of you.

I will make bets around the size of half of the pot if I'm in a situation where I think my hand might be second best but I'm not really sure. In this case I want to deny drawing odds to worse hands than mine that might improve to beat me. However, since I doubt my hand is good, I don't want to risk too many chips. If I bet the minimum, I could also invite someone to play back at me with a lesser hand because I showed weakness, so I need to make a big enough bet to discourage this type of play. If I'm beat, usually my opponent will re-raise. If I get callers, I figure I'm probably beat as well.

I make a half/min bet when I'm on a flush draw and the flop showed two of my suits. I want to bet enough to prevent the top pair to try to bully me out of the pot. But I don't want to bet so much that everyone leaves the pot (flush draws are good multiway but crappy heads up).

Small bets lure others into thinking you have a hand, but not a very good hand and may be likely to come over the top hard at you.

If you're holding a flush, 4 of a kind or whatever, then that can work in your favour. He throws money into the pot thinking he's got you beat with 3 of a kind or two pairs.

It generally isn't great play, as it invites people to stay in the hand which can work against you. More people, less chance that you've got the best hand. But, if you want to lure someone into investing in the pot and you have either a big hand, or a possible big hand, then it can be a useful tool.
